Diagnosing a Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injuries are no joke and need a prompt evaluation. Traumatic brain injury patients are evaluated by a qualified medical professional with expertise in assessing head injuries and traumatic brain injury symptoms. Typically, a neurological examination will be performed to test neurological functions including: motor and sensory skills, hearing and speech, coordination and balance, mental state, cognition, and any changes in mood or behavior. Proper evaluation of a traumatic brain injury includes head imaging by a CT scan or MRI.

CT scans (Computed tomography)  is the most commonly used imaging technology to assess people with suspected moderate to severe TBI.

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) generates highly detailed images of bodily tissues. It can be employed following the initial evaluation and treatment, as it offers increased sensitivity and the ability to detect subtle brain changes that may have been overlooked by a CT scan.

Time is of the essence when it comes to traumatic brain injuries. The earlier detection and diagnosis, the better the outcomes. Call 911 or visit your nearest ED if you or someone you know has a suspected TBI.
