TBI MedSLP Brain Injury Awareness Campaign 2024

Feeding the Fire: The Amplified Impact of PTSD on Brain Injury: Imagine PTSD as the fuel that turns a brain injury from a contained flame into a raging inferno.

Experiencing a brain injury can be an incredibly traumatic experience. Not only does it have physical implications, but it can also lead to mental health challenges, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In fact, PTSD and traumatic brain injury (TBI) often coexist, as brain injuries are frequently sustained in traumatic experiences.

PTSD and traumatic brain injury

Understanding the association between PTSD and TBI can be complex. One theory postulates a negative feedback loop of anxiety and sensitivity to threat. This suggests that experiencing a traumatic event can lead to heightened sensitivity and anxiety, which in turn may exacerbate the symptoms and outcomes of a TBI.

For survivors of brain injuries, the phrase "Don’t bulldoze my boundaries" is an important advocacy statement. It emphasizes the need for respect and understanding of their personal limits and boundaries.

Trauma complicates the fundamental task of feeling safe. It not only makes you feel unsafe but also challenges your sense of self-worth. This can lead victims of traumatic brain injury to deprioritize their own needs. Therefore, it's essential that survivors are provided with the right support to navigate this difficult journey, and that their boundaries are respected.
